What will new designations mean to communities and land managers. How do we sell the benefits examples of challenges addressed such as impacts of climate change

Nature Recovery, perspectives from a national to a local scale

Site Visits

Low Beckside Farm near Penrith

18th October 2024

We will be hosted by staff from the owners and managers of the farm, Ernest Cook Trust, and will learn more about how they run it as a base for green skills and land based learning. We will also hear more about the Trust’s plans for managing the land with nature in mind, and their links with Cumbria Connect operating across the county. If you are interested in apprenticeships for young people, we will hear direct from some of those involved here at Low Beckside.

Free shuttle bus provided from Penrith station @10.30am, the visit will run from 11am until 3pm with a buffet lunch provided,

Connemara National Park

4th November 2024

The site visit will look at the establishment of community training and projects to control rhododendron, and how this work is supporting their incomes, and also as a result some people have found careers in the NPWS.

There will be presentations from Forum Connemara regarding the Dulra project, from WAN/Leenane Development Association regarding Rhododendron Management in the Bundorragha river catchment area, from Farm Relief Services on working with the NPWS on Rhododendron management projects, and NPWS speaking on some of our experiences.

Programme will be approximately talks in the morning, which could also be available to access online, which would be followed by an early lunch and then a field trip to look at one of the projects in the afternoon finishing at 16.00

Field Trip to Chilterns National Landscape

Date: Wednesday 13th November 2024  10.30 to find out more about the national arts programme ‘Nature Calling’.

Focussing on our conference theme ‘Nature for All’ this trip is hosted by Chilterns National Landscape in the Luton area. Join us to find out more about the creative process with writer Lee Nelson supported by Luton based arts organisation Revoluton Arts. Find out how they are engaging with local communities and linking with the chalk grasslands and surrounding hills as well as local greenspaces and heritage. Lee is an exciting and established artist who works with words and people in his home town of Luton. We will hear more about the Nature Calling programme happening across 6 national landscapes in 2024-25; how this work will engage with new audiences living locally; and why nature and landscapes for everyone is key to the future of protected landscapes.

Details: meet at Bushmead community hub in North Luton for 10.30am. The visit will include a walk around Bradgers Hill County Wildlife Site followed by presentations and a discussion at nearby Marsh Farm, home of Revoluton Arts who are producing this initiative.

Lunch will be provided and the visit will conclude by 3.00pm.

Yorkshire Dales National Park

Elliott has worked in landscape, conservation and rural development roles for over 25 years. He recently moved to work as the Director of Parks Services at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. And before this he worked for 13 years as the Partnership Manager for the Forest of Bowland National Landscape. Elliott originally qualified with BSc. Environmental Science and MSc. Rural and Regional Resources Planning (with Rural Development).

Over the years, Elliott has been active in a range of regional, national and international organisations and partnerships, including the EUROPARC Nature, Regional and Landscape Parks Taskforce, the National Landscapes Association, LEADER Local Action Groups and Local Nature Partnerships in the UK.

Born and raised in Scotland, Elliott has now made his home with his family in north west England, on the edge of the Forest of Bowland. When he's not working, he likes to be walking or running the fells, doing a spot of 'bad' birdwatching, or watching his sons play sport.

I have been working for the past ten years in Parks & Wildlife Finland, which is a governmental agency responsible for all protected areas in Finland, over 5 million hectares in total. My current work includes leading the restoration prioritization, cost-effectiveness analytics, and restoration monitoring in the Finnish protected area network.

Mike McClure

Mike McClure is the Landscapes NI development manager. Landscapes NI is a collaborative landscape network in Northern Ireland, made up of 16 organisations that seeks to support the members for an integrated approach to landscape promotion and management. Mike’s background was in outdoor and environmental education and outdoor sports development having worked for over 35 years in the sector. He remains passionate about our natural and cultural heritage and the importance of landscapes in connecting people to wildlife and their heritage. Mike also has been involved with pan European developments in outdoor sport and recreation and his involvement in European Projects has provided him with a broad vision for what can be achieved through collaborative partnership working. He is still active in the outdoors and is a proponent of daily exercise in natural spaces as the only way to start the day!

Catherine Mealing-Jones

Catherine took up post as Chief Executive of BBNPA in July 2021 with a vision to make BBNPA an exemplar of how a National Park Authority can drive action to create a vibrant and sustainable future. Prior to joining BBNPA Catherine was Director of Growth at the UK Space Agency where she led work on the United Kingdom’s goal of growing the UK space sector, supporting innovation, working closely with international partners, attracting investment, and working across government and with industry and academia to drive a new approach to space in the UK. Catherine has a range of experience from leading the delivery of major projects at the Home Office to providing strategic policy advice in the criminal justice system. She also worked abroad for a time for the then Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Catherine is a CIPFA Fellow and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. She is also an active and experienced non-executive director.
